This was the deepest wish of his dear mother and Lady Catherine - not Darcy himself. He probably felt no reason to tell BIngley about it because he didn't give it any thought or merit.

I think that Darcy felt free to marry whomever he chose to make his wife - though I doubt he ever thought he would cause such a commotion by his choice. ;-)

I don't think that Darcy looked upon the wishes of these two women as a legitimate engagement; therefore, he had no reason to ever mention it to Bingley or his sisters. Caroline had every reason to believe he was available.
