Mr. Collins' 'resignation'   Written by abdullyne (1/22/2004 10:22 a.m.)
Are you new?

A comment made by Mr. Collins in Chap. 20, after Lizzy rejected his proposal continues to puzzle me. "My dear Madam" ..... "for I have often observed that resignation is never so perfect as when the blessing denied begins to lose somewhat its value in our estimation".

Sometimes I think I get it - that since he feels/thinks less highly of Lizzy now, its easier for him to be nonchalant about the whole thing. But on subsequent readings I get more confused. Maybe, I'm reading too much into this. Thanks.
