She might be decorously seated in her parlour, profitably employed with the family sewing or other needlework as a lady should, just noticing by chance what happened outside her (very well-placed) window! ;-)

Here Mrs. Philips reminds me of Rachel Lynde in Anne of Green Gables, except that Mrs. Lynde's work "was always done and well done", despite her interest in her neighbours!

Yet with all this [work], Mrs. Rachel found abundant time to sit for hours at her kitchen window, knitting quilts...and keeping a sharp eye on the main road that crossed the hollow...
