Gambling   Written by Line (1/21/2004 8:28 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, The Whispering..., penned by Nasima
Are you new?

As to your first question - yes, they are playing cards for money. I remember being rather shocked at this myself, the first time I ever read P&P! It just goes to show that standards of behaviour for a clergyman have changed considerably in 200 years - in JA's time, the ministry was much more "just another job" than the vocation we expect it to be nowadays, and respectable people apparently saw nothing wrong with a clergyman gambling, as long as he didn't waste too much money on it.

As to your second question, it does seem rather strange that Mr. Collins wouldn't overhear their conversation, especially when his own name and that of his noble patroness are mentioned! Maybe somebody else can answer this one.
