] About the Carriage, it would have had to pass by her house and she would have recognised their carriage and guessed that it was bringing them home.

That would imply that Mrs Philips sits by her window most of the day watching what's happening -- that way she could be the first to know (or guess) any news! Sounds like something she might do, actually.
