] I noticed that AD gave that line to Mr. Bennet.

When I read that there had been some question about who asked this question and that anyone thought it might be Kitty, I was astounded. In the first version of P&P I ever read the line was unattributed, but I automatically assumed it was Mr. Bennet's. He'd started the conversation about balls to set up the family for his big surprise and to tease them for awhile until he sprang it. The conversation was getting away from him. I just assumed the question was meant to get it back on track.
