] Isn't Denny conceding that Wickham might "wish to avoid" Darcy? Which is the thing Wickham was pretending he wouldn't do.

Denny said that Wickham had business in town. This is what he presented as the facts of the case as he knew them. As I said in my previous post, I do think that Denny implies that Wickham was avoiding Darcy, but he didn't say that was what happened for sure.

I just don't think we know Wickham's motives/reasons at this point in the novel. :-)
