But we don't know that, do we?   Written by kathleen (elder) (1/20/2004 1:58 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Inconsistency in Wickham's story?, penned by John W

] But in fact, at Netherfield, it is Wickham who IS driven away, by the presence of Darcy.

We know that Wickham is not at the Netherfield Ball. When Lydia asked about him, Denny

told them that Wickham had been obliged to go to town on business the day before, and was not yet returned; adding, with a significant smile --

"I do not imagine his business would have called him away just now, if he had not wished to avoid a certain gentleman here."

While Denny certainly implies that the presence of Darcy was a contributing factor in Wickham's absence, we don't know Wickham's reasons for sure (at this point in the story, at least). I do wonder, however, what Wickham's business might have been ("town" means London, I assume?). Does he (claim to) have investments? :-)
