Wonderful answers! Thank you. However, while reading further I have more questions about the militia. For instance,

In chapter 16

The officers of the -- -- shire were in general very creditable, gentlemanlike set ......

It was the prospect of constant society, and good society," he added, "which was my chief inducement to enter the -- -- shire.

There are several -- -- in the text when refering to the officers and the -- -- shire. What does it mean?
