...more than we know about   Written by Julianne E. (1/20/2004 6:31 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Elizabeth only thinks of Darcy..., penned by Mary-L
Are you new?

Not true! At the Philips' card party after she's met Wickham, the narrator says Elizabeth is hoping to hear from Wickham more info about Darcy and their strange meeting. I know this can be seen as simply an attempt to know more about Wickham, but Elizabeth is not Lydia and doesn't only want to listen to a man prattle on about who he is and where he's from.

Furthermore, IMNSHO Austen has put in all of this info about Darcy and made Elizabeth a person who wants to know all of this because she does not yet realize what her feelings for him are. If JA wanted us to see that Elizabeth was thinking about Wickham all the time, I think she would've added at least a little more inquisitiveness on her side, and then we'd know about Wickham's character right away. But she chooses not to reveal that. It's Darcy's character that's important because he's the one who occupies Elizabeth's mind.

I'm not trying to say that she secretly loves him at this point -- very far from it. I'm just saying that what she says and what she thinks are very different things, as is true with all of us. This is what makes Elizabeth so wonderfully human IMO.
