Ignoring what awareness?   Written by Kathi (1/20/2004 6:09 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Feelings, penned by Jeanine
Are you new?

] maybe I should say ignoring an awareness they have of each other.

What awareness? As Darcy is gradually becoming more attracted to her, Lizzy is perfectly unaware of him.

] I agree that Lizzy has decided to dislike Mr. Darcy. She goes to great lengths to build a huge dislike of him.

Up until she believes Wickham, I don't think she goes to any great lengths to dislike him. The narrator tells us she likes him too little (not dislikes him too much) to be concerned about his opinion of her.

] A little overboard in fact - grabbing onto Wickums story and not using the common sense and intelligence that for the most part she normally has.

It is when she believes Wickham that she goes overboard, not before, I don't think. She is obviously gratified by Wickham's attention and finds him attractive and charming, as opposed to Darcy, who made uncomplimentary remarks about her before ever meeting her. What has Darcy given her to be attracted to?

] Love and hate is sometimes referred as mirror feelings - whether you love someone or hate someone that emotion creates a tie. You have to spend thought and energy to cultivate it and keep it growing.

Yes, sometimes that happens. I just don't see any evidence that it is happening to Lizzy. Darcy is only the man who though her not handsome enough to dance with. She likes him too little (not dislikes him too much) to care about his approbation. It is Wickham she thinks about, Wickham whose attention she is gratified by, Wickham whose heart she wants to capture at the Netherfield Ball, Wickham she is disappointed not to see.

] JA was so into subtle irony - she shows us that she does understand this instant awareness in Bingley and Jane - and offers them as a comparison to gauge the lengths that Darcy and Lizzy go in their own game going the opposite path.

That is one possibility, I just don't see any evidence of it, and I see evidence of the opposite, as I said above.
