Why does Wickham pick Elizabeth to tell his story? I know...I know...he probably saw that she had noticed his and Darcy's 'greeting', but still, why not talk to the officers, and ask them about Darcy?

Mr. Denny seems to be into the whole thing...
the absolute fact of his absence was pronounced by his friend Mr. Denny, ... adding, with a significant smile,
``I do not imagine his business would have called him away just now, if he had not wished to avoid a certain gentleman here.''

But no woman, or even another person, seems to be into the secret.
