] It was enough that he admired Lizzie and payed attention to her to make Caroline jealous. This was interferring with her own campaign to win Darcy for herself, taking the focus away from herself.

Exactly. Caroline was jealous of anything that took Darcy's attention away from her own fascinating self, whether it was a book or a letter to his sister or another woman.
