The Mystery of Captain Carter   Written by Art (1/20/2004 12:22 a.m.)
Are you new?

In chapter 7, Lydia is enraptured with a Captain Carter, apparently a friend of the regimental commander Colonel Forster. This Captain is soon leaving for London, and she hopes to see him before he goes. By chapter 9 he has left, but she hopes he'll be back in time for the Netherfield ball.

Skip ahead five chapters to Chapter 14. Lydia is anticipating the return of an officer from London, who finally shows up in Chapter 15, along with a friend. But this officer isn't her former favourite Captain Carter, but an officer never before mentioned: a Mr. Denny. The story proceeds from there, and Captain Carter is never mentioned again.

What's going on here? Where did Mr. Denny come from? Where did Captain Carter go? Did he make the same mysterious journey Mrs. Long made in Chapter 2, but forget to come back? Did he resign his commission to become Edward Ferrars' servant? Did he emigrate to the United States to start a peanut farm? Enquiring minds want to know!
