JA's irony here?   Written by Ramya (1/11/2004 3:15 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Lizzy and Jane, penned by Hannah M
Are you new?

]I found it interesting that Lizzy is not immediatly singled out as the star of the book. It does not become apparent that she is the focus until Chapter 3 or 4. Of course, everyone knows that the book is about her.

I agree. Years ago, when I first read it, I got the impression at the beginning that Jane was the heroine of the story- she is beautiful, one of her mother's favourites, Mr. Bingley dances with her twice, and so on.

I feel JA is being ironic here- by making Lizzy, who though is pretty herself, is only second best in looks, is not a favourite of her mother, and is slighted by a very eligible young man at the ball-the heroine.
