in consequence of the missive, Pride, penned by Bridget D
I think perhaps JA's contemporaries did not regard pride as a very serious fault, although it was certainly a fault, it was not serious as long as it did not interfere with honesty and generosity. In MP, Sir Thomas had "principle as well as pride", and he was generous to the Prices. I often think that if darcy had married a dull woman such as Anne deB instead of Eliz, he might have become like Sir T (grave, humourless), while if he had been infatuated and married an irritating wife like Caroline, he might have become like Mr Palmer in S&S (rather rude especially to his wife). With Eliz, I believe he became more like Mr Knightley in Emma.
