in consequence of the missive, Did Darcy change?, penned by Therese
I have always felt that, from my first introduction to P&P. He did not NEED to change his character, he merely needed to correct some temporary aberrations in his behavior. Who among us has ALWAYS presented our best side to EVERYONE in EVERY SITUATION? Who among us has no regrets about opening our mouth, when we should have kept it shut? Who among us has not interfered in someone's life without being asked, and caused untold hurt? What Darcy did in saving Elizabeth's whole family from disgrace, at GREAT cost to his own dignity and pride, is simply priceless! I know this is not a popular opinion, so I've never shared it here before this, but that's what I think. Thank you, Therese, for saying it, and making it possible to agree with you!
WHEW! Thank you, Jane Austen, you made your characters real people for me! :-)
