He lied by omission. He says so.. that he is ashamed that he resorted to methods of deception, to keep Bingley away from Jane. He didn't tell B a direct lie, since B woudl not ask him if he knew about Jane, but he colluded in Caroline's lies. He knew that J was in town. He could have told him that, if he had wanted to. Instead it is clear that he and Caro were both deceiving Bingley as to Jane's whereabouts., She coudl have invited Jane to a party and then Bingley wouldd have met her.. but she didn't. She chose to problaby directly lie if asked and say that she hadn't heard from J for ages. Or at least not mention that J had called ot see her and she had visited her...
