Yes he may not have actively lied, in the novel. But he did lie by omission, in that he knew that Jane was in town..and he concealed it from Bingley. I dont see that he would have actively lied to Bingley since B was not going to ask him if he knew anything about Jane. But he admits that he resorted to "methods of deception" to conceal from Bingley that Jane was in London..and so he is implicated in Caroline's active lying about it... It is quite possible that Bingely DID ask Caro if she had heard from Jane and she lied about it, or at least didnt mention that J had written that she was coming to London and that she and J had exchanged social calls...
