Well he does pay out money to Wickham and has to lower himself to bargain with the man. But that's his choice. ANd he does it at least partly becuase he felt guilty that maybe he should have let people know what he knew about Wick's bad character. I agree that he had to suffer a bit, to reform him,just as Eliz suffers in her own guilt that she beleived ill of Darcy, that she didn't try harder to make sure that Wickham could not have harmed Lydia etc etc.
