I know there has been lots of discussion about how Lady C could have learned of a rumored engagement between Darcy and Lizzy. I came across something in this reading that I had never really picked up on before. Towards the beginning of Chpt 57 when Mr. B gets the letter from Mr. Collins:
He begins with congratulations on the approaching nuptials of my eldest daughter, of which, it seems, he has been told by some of the good-natured, gossiping Lucases...'Having thus offered you the sincere congratulations of Mrs. Collins and myself on this happy event, let me now add a short hint on the subject of another; of which we have been advertised by the same authority. So it certainly seems as if Mr. Collins has confirmed that the information of not only Jane's engagement but the rumor of Lizzy's did come from the Lucases.
I also came across something that seems to really give us a good glimpse at Mr. B's thoughts on his marriage. In Chpt 59 while discussing her engagement he says to Lizzy:
My child, let me not have the grief of seeing you unable to respect your partner in life. The novel actually emphasizes the YOU in that sentence from Mr. B. I think that's the only "serious" thoughts on his marriage we get in the entire novel and he's trying to warn Lizzy that he doesn't want to see her end up in the same situation.
And also in Chpt 59 we get Mrs. B showing, for a mere second, a hint of rational, sensible thought (IMO):
Oh, my dear Lizzy! pray apologise for my having disliked him so much before. I hope he will overlook it. It's sandwiched between her exclamations over all the fancy things Lizzy will have, almost like an afterthought, but it does seem to be the only time in the novel Mrs. B thinks she has acted, not exactly wrong in the past, but in such a way that she does feel an apology is necessary. AND she hopes that he'll be able to overlook it so maybe she is aware that her behavior has been...not all that is proper. :)
