The couldn't afford a footman/manservant, but they might afford two maidservants, cheaper than manservant -- re "The Complete Servant" published in 1825 on incomes and servants --
"£200: A professed Servant-maid -of-all-work, at from £12 - £14.
A Gentleman & Lady with children:
According to that reference, they would need an income of over 400 a year to be able to afford a manservant, and even then, the man would usually be a boy. The Prices in MP had two maidservants.
