|How did Darcy keep Wickham from leaving London?

Was it really due to a lack of money?
Wickham admits to Darcy he still hoped to make his fortune by marrying well in a foreign land.
Did Darcy have any legal authority (or the threat of a legal authority) to keep him to his promise? Was it against the law to run off with such a young girl and live together unmarried? Could he have been jailed?
I have never understood why Wickham stayed in town to be married. Darcy clearly leaves town for a few days and returns for the wedding. Couldn't Wickham have run off to a foreign land and assumed a new identity?
Was he offered so great a sum of money to induce him to stay?
Please enlighten me. Yes, i know, i know, the story would not end as it does if he had run off, but still....
