...is in not forcing Wickham into a corner. If she did that it would be a one-off situation and the air-cleared. As it is, he now knows she has the measure of him but is unsure just how much she knows...and she isn't going to tell him, is she? She told him enough to worry him with an unstated warning that was far more effective than a row. Game, set and match to you ma'am.
Footnote. In Hampshire,J.A's home county, today, there doth exist "Wickham Vineyards". Quite what relevance the name Wickham has in modern times I know not. The business is recent,starting up in 1987, but the irony stood out when I found out. What a perfect occupation for good old George.(-:
