I agree with you, though I maintain that his attitude at first sight (or nearly first sight : he had had his servants, even mute impression, and saw them remaining apart when he appeared, not approaching as would have done, for instance, Mrs Bennet or Lydia... or Lady Catherine : they showed some delicacy) towards perfect stranger was an extraordinary endeavour for him, something he would not have believed to be able to.
