in consequence of the missive, I wondered the same thing...why would he talk about E, penned by Stacey GC
I think it likely that Darcy first mentions Lizzy through letters from Netherfield. We literally see him writing his sister and Caroline constantly asking him to include this and that. Darcy probably (before he loses patience with Caroline's constant interruptions) writes something like, "Caroline sends her wishes of hoping to see you soon. We are now in the drawing-room and Miss Elizabeth is recently a member of our party at Netherfield, here to attend her sick sister,... They are from the neighboring estate of Longbourn...met them at Meryton assembly..." He writes her long letters and I think he would try to include matters of interest to a young girl which would be parties and balls, interesting conversations... Therefore, I feel he would tell her about the Lucas party and the Netherfield ball mentioning who some of the attendees were and bits and pieces of interest. It's likely Lizzy would come up in these letters as well. Georgiana may have written him back asking him who he danced with if he didn't mention it himself and maybe a few specific questions about Lizzy...
Then Lizzy's name would start to appear again when he was at Rosings. Darcy would mention that Lizzy was of their party for tea/evening visits, etc possibly mentioning that Lizzy played and sang for them and was accomplished. Bits and pieces of information were likely disseminated over a period of time in letters to peak Georgiana's interest. (I like the way Darcy's letter writing shows what an attentive brother he is.)
Also, Lady C said that the next time she wrote Georgiana, she was going to charge her not to neglect practicing and I could see her telling Georgiana (after some explanation of the context) that she had told "Miss Bennet several times, that she would never play really well, unless she practises more;..."
I see it as a very natural culmination of Lizzy's name being mentioned enough in a manner to have Georgiana feel Lizzy would be someone she'd like to know and expresses an interest to Darcy that she would wish to meet her. It might even have been said long before the meeting at Pemberley.
