I supposed that anybody could visit any private house by then, I remember bitter but funny letters from Walpole (whose house was unfavourably close from London, and attracted tenths of visitors everyday, not always very polite!), who certainly, had he been given the possibility of refusing them, had seized it most gratefully!
Of course, the housekeeper and the gardiner can be supposed to have had different attitudes towards "true ladies and gentlemen", and uncivil people.
