...but I doubt it was ever Wickham's. Mary King's prospective dowry snatched away, debt left behind to the local traders and possibly a small fear of Lizzie discovering the truth about him, what was he to do? My biggest question was why tie himself to Lydia at all, let alone proffer marriage? Why not just carry on being himself without the burden of a possible scandal to attach himself to( because I don't believe marriage was ever in his plans to someone with no financal security) ? The militia was moving on and with new pastures to explore(and exploit)why attach himself to a ( very)young girl who it could hardly have escaped his notice was hardly Miss Intelligence personified. It's one of the things that don't quite add up.
