in consequence of the missive, I was thinking of the talk of fishing and, penned by mikeB in Japan
..and his faux-pas of introducing himself (and how badly it went down with Darcy), would either the Gardiners or Darcy do more than bow, raise a hat or wish a good afternoon etc,without the formality of an introduction by someone who knew both? As Lizzie was present, this was done at Darcy's request; if she hadn't been present, would etiquette allow more than just a general greeting. General consesnsus of the times would tend to say no, at least at Darcy's level of society. Views?
