Peeks into Wickham’s mind are so rare and brief I decided to wait till this week and do these together:
In Chapter 27 when Lizzy is about to leave for Kent we get our first peek into Wikham’s thoughts, “His present pursuit could not make him forget that Elizabeth had been the first to excite and to deserve his attention, the first to listen and to pity, the first to be admired;” This seems to confirm Elizabeth’s belief, “that she would have been his only choice, had fortune permitted it”
In Chapter 41 we get an ever briefer peek at his thoughts after Lizzy speaks about Darcy improving on acquaintance “There was a something in her countenance which made him listen with an apprehensive and anxious attention We are also told they parted with mutual civility, and possibly a mutual desire of never meeting again. I love that JA tells us it’s possible Wickham desires this. We are told what his thoughts might be but it’s not definite.
