Iíd be surprised if many readers believe anything because Mrs. Bennet says it. Elizabeth may exaggerate a bit but on the whole I believe her observations to be accurate in this case (and I donít believe she was influenced by her motherís ideas). Also, Darcy draws a similar conclusion from Bingleyís behavior and his conversation with Bingley confirms that the conclusion was correct. Otherwise Darcy would have been reassured that Bingley has no intentions toward Jane rather than feeling like he needs to conceal her presence in London.
The Gardiners concluded that Darcy was in love with Lizzy based on much less observation than Lizzy has had of Jane and Bingley.
