|A more disturbing aspect of Lydia.

In most of Jane Austenís novels the servant class is hardly commented on. But here in Ch 39 Lydia refers to the waiter in a terrible manner.
I cannot recollect which other character in JA novels has made such an unprovoked and uncharitable comment about a servant. In my opinion this is much worse than the such a nasty little freckled thing which can be dismissed as unthinking cattiness.
I wonder if JA is showing this rather nasty side of Lydia (which is more than just empty-headedness) for a reason.
