Evoking a double standard for ladies and gentlemen, I was not thinkning of a marriage for money, I was thinking of what marriage meant for men and women.
Above the ways of earning money for a man, I have repeated several times that it was right that with no fortune he could be a clerk or a curate at 50 pounds per year all his life, but then he could not marry a woman without fortune. And for the enriching jobs, it was necessary to start with 2000 pounds, for some others it may be less but it always needed money to start; and a few hundreds pounds to become an officer, where he could maybe find occasions to marry both for love and money...
