if Eliz had a double standard for ladies and gentlemen by thinking that gentlemen might marry for money but ladies must not, the she would really be illogical -- since men had opportunities of earning their own living, but ladies had no opportunity at all. And Wickham need not have been so concerned about considerations of gentility, so the four gentlemanly professions of army, navy, law and church were not the only opportunities available to him e.g. he could have obtained employment as a clerk perhaps.
