Just before this, Darcy seems to be getting rather intense about the conversation. From what I can tell, he's warming to the subject of Elizabeth being all right with being far away from Longbourn, and I think he has Pemberley in mind when he's speaking of this, since it's rather far away from Elizabeth's home. He's hoping she'll give a hint that she wouldn't mind moving far away. But when she only looks a surprised, he thinks he's coming on too strong, and draws back, perhaps thinking he's crowding her or moving too fast.
