You're right. I must have misread that. Then, that changes a lot!
So, he wants to believe that Jane is indifferent. And then observes her behavior to find evidence of her indifference. He is already prejudiced against Jane and her family.
Perhaps there were some ulterior motives behind Darcy's meddling, he really does not want Bingley to marry Jane, even though Bingley is so in love with Jane. Perhaps he does want Bingley for his sister.
All I can say is, "Badly done, Darcy!"
