I don't think an attempt to seduce Elizabeth would have been successful, but that doesn't mean his attempts couldn't have done some damage, even without her doing anything improper. It didn't take much for a lady to be considered 'compromised' in those days, particularly if the 'gentleman' involved was doing it on purpose, just for spite. Wickham had an established track record of behaving irrationally and immorally in response to disappointment, and I could easily see him doing something like spreading rumors about a woman who'd done something to displease him, just to ruin her reputation.
