in consequence of the missive, Darcy's letter, penned by Nikki N
..is to answer an attack on his character that has to be refuted/defended.. He has to allow the truth about Wickham to be known because it isn't just dislike, but lies and also besmirching him as a person. If Wickham is believed, then that makes Darcy appear a liar unless he offers proof to the contrary. If Lizzie believes Wickham totally, then eventually the story will spread to damaging lengths. By declaring his version to someone he at least believes honourable even though she's refused his proposal, he at least will have tried to dispel her dislike of him on that score.
Lying about the Bingley episode is against his basic code of conduct; he despises deception as against his morals, so he cannot but admit his part in it. In that he commits no folly.
Another Darcy is emerging..
