If the Bingleys have only been told of the circumstances of the refusal of the living, that surely cannot be a big issue. What have they heard about Wickhams infamous behaviour? I mean its not as if he wasted his godfather's munificence by just fooling around with chambermaids at university!
One possible explanation is that Meryton is not the first place that Wickham has gone around spreading calumnies. And this is not the first time that Caroline has come across accusations of dishonourableness against Darcy.
