I am sorry but not sure what you mean by they were "genteel only because of their money". Gentility was a matter of ancestry, connexions, a certain type of life, a certain degree of manners, and adherence to certain professions such as the military, the law, and owning land. Wealth was part of it but only a part. It was possible to be poor like Miss Bates or Jane Fairfax, but of gentle birth and entitled to the status of a gentleman or woman.
