There's nothing to indicate that Mr Collins was ever very poor, his father was a miser who hated spending money, but sent him to university, that meant his father must have some money, and being miserly, would certainly have saved something. The living presented by Lady Cat gave him "early and unexpected prosperity" because, unlike MP's Edmund Bertram and NA's Henry Tilney, who were the sons of landowners with livings in their gift, Collins had not been assured of a living so soon after taking orders. If Lady Cat had not given him a living so soon, he would probably have to serve as a curate for some time before getting a living e.g. like Charles Hayter in Persuasion.
