in consequence of the missive, civilities, penned by Nikki N
I am not convinced Darcy’s comment is a compliment to Lizzy either. Only moments before Lizzy said “I am not a great reader” (8) so if we apply his comment to Lizzy is it not a criticism along the same lines as it is assumed for Miss Bingley? Caroline leaves the substantial habit of reading to improve one’s mind off her accomplished woman list and Lizzy claims she is not a great reader at all. To turn Darcy’s comment into a compliment to Lizzy then do not we have to assume he disbelieves her claim she is not a great reader? Also I do not see how Lizzy’s short attempt at reading before being lured away to the amusements at the card table would inspire Darcy to give such a compliment. (;D)
