I liked Wickham (& believed his story) because: Elizabeth like & believed him; and he liked Elizabeth. I thought then (& still do, mostly) that Elizabeth Bennet was the most fantastic & excellent friend I could want. Wickham seemed to understand her superiority almost immediately, and that gave me reason to appreciate his intelligence and perception.
On subsequent readings, I did see the holes in Wickham's story (as some/many of you did on your first read). I will only defend myself, once again, by pointing out that I was 13 years old at the time AND quite naive about handsome men lying to pretty young women. =8-D
