that probably caused him to avoid people and wish not to have anything to do with them.
But why? He went to an Assembly, he must have known that as a newcomer, and a man of wealth and rank, people would be noticing him and talking about him. As another poster has siad, it can hardly be the first time in his life that he went to a country assembly or soemewhere that his status would be "noticed" and perhaps talked about. He must, as a wealthy man, have encountered people before who were interested in him because of his social stature and money, and soem might indeed be a bit pushing to get to know him because of that. But surely he could have over the years learned to cope with that and to devise methods of politely discouraging people if he felt they were TOO pushing, other than the tactic of just refusing to interact with anyone, because some people might be too pushing..
