|My first impression of Wickham

When I first read the book, I thought Wickham was being genuine but dumb in telling someone he had just met his story. And I was amazed Elizabeth didn't notice this at all. Further re-readings have shown me how manipulative this initial conversation is.
And you have poor Jane, dismissed because she wants to think well of everyone, yet giving the best piece of advice Lizzie could ever need: "It is, in short, impossible for us to conjecture the causes or circumstances which may have alienated them, without actual blame on either side." I think I prefer Jane's more cautious approach.
