Chapter 15, first paragraph.
It is interesting that here in a few sentences JA lays out how this oddity came to be. Nature and nurture. He had an illiterate and miserly father who bullied him and JA implies that that has contributed to his “humility” which we can interpret as sycophancy I suppose. In spite of going to university he just scraped by there and did not get anything useful out of it. And then suddenly he wins the lottery, gains authority, has a patroness and this made him altogether a mixture of pride and obsequiousness, self-importance and humility.
Now JA fleshes out her characters wonderfully and without much physical description. But I cannot recollect where else she has so succinctly given a history which is the psychological basis of a character as she does here.
