At the Ball, he was in a public assembly with a bunch of locals with "little beauty and no fashion". He doesn't know anyone yet and doesn't care to either. Elizabeth is now Bingley's fellow-houseguest, and someone he is beginning to be attracted to. Perhaps that made a difference. Perhaps Darcy is the kind of person who can be thoughtless about people outside his inner circle. I wonder how he would have reacted if it had been Mrs. Bennet, and not Lizzy, who had been treated so by the Bingley sisters.
