|Chaps 13: another single gentleman

and this one is to become the master of Longbourn estate. What a fine thing for Mrs Bennet's girls. :-)
Mr Collins is one of my favourite of JA's characters. His letter introduces him splendidly:
he heaps praise upon his patroness, "whose bounty and beneficence has preferred me to the valuable rectory of this parish"
he prioritizes most highly his "earnest endeavor to demean myself with grateful respect towards her Ladyship"
and also, of course,
to "be ever ready to perform those rites and ceremonies which are instituted by the Church of England."
I think Mr Bennet captures the impression left by this letter extremely well: "There is a mixture of servility and self-importance in his letter, which promises well. I am impatient to see him." And so are we, the readers. And we don't have long to wait.
