People in England still believe that being 'born to it' insures ability, as to Prince Charles and Prince William. Blood pride created belief that being born to it ensures ability and competence, but it also meant protection from lower temptations. Darcy, as part of the landed gentry, was socially equal to Elizabeth. She is the daughter of landed gentry. But her female line makes her below him, and he feels his elevated bloodline will protect him from her charms.
