I see that there is no specific thread for chapter 9.
At the beginning, I noticed this time an element I had not noticed the first time I read it : "the two elegant ladies who waited on his sisters". That is, not only his sisters had each her own maid (normal : though sisters, one was married and the other, the only lady of the permanent household), but these maids looked like "elegant ladies". This was certainly an element of "fashion" and one should not wonder at the sisters' spending "more than they ought".
